Colorful lights and the glow of Morro Rock make the holiday season special in Morro Bay. The annual Lighted Boat Parade brings the waterfront to life with festive displays, holiday music, and a cheerful atmosphere along the Embarcadero. If you're planning a December trip, there are plenty of activities at the boat parade in Morro Bay to enjoy before, during, and after the parade.

What to Know Before You Go

  • Date: Saturday, December 5, 2026
  • Time: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Location: Morro Bay Embarcadero, Morro Bay, California
  • Admission: Free
  • Tip: Arrive early, dress in warm layers, and plan to walk from downtown parking to the waterfront.

The event depends on weather conditions. If wind or weather makes the parade unsafe, it will be canceled without a rescheduled date. Check the official event details before heading out.

Watch the Decorated Boats Cruise the Harbor

Boats decorated with colorful holiday lights parade across a harbor at night, casting bright reflections on the water.

Fishing boats, leisure boats, and yachts decorated with bright holiday lights are the main highlight of the parade. You may also spot kayaks joining the festive scene. It’s a special sight that goes beyond the usual holiday decorations, which is why locals and travelers look forward to it every year. As the boats glide across the harbor, their lights reflect on the water, making the display even more memorable after sunset.

The Embarcadero offers viewing areas stretching from Tidelands Park toward Morro Rock. Arrive early to choose a comfortable spot along the waterfront and settle in before the parade begins. Since the event draws a crowd, walking from downtown parking is a practical way to avoid some of the traffic near the harbor.

Visit Santa's House by the Giant Chessboard

Before the parade, stop by Santa’s House near the Giant Chessboard on the Embarcadero. It opens at 5 p.m., and admission is free, making it a great stop for budget-conscious travelers and families. If you’d like to take a photo with Santa, he’s available during the first three weekends of December. You can also grab hot chocolate, coffee, and cookies at Santa’s House, perfect for warming up on a chilly evening. It’s a fun way to enjoy the seasonal atmosphere before finding a spot to watch the boats.

Listen to Holiday Music Near South T-Pier

Musicians perform outdoors at night beside a Christmas tree and a tall mast decorated with colorful lights.

The holiday spirit wouldn’t be complete without some festive music. Arrive a little earlier and catch the Morro Bay White Caps Band performing near the South T-Pier on December 5, starting 5 P.M. It’s a lovely way to enjoy the sounds of Christmas while taking in the harbor views and making more holiday memories in Morro Bay.

Enjoy Dinner With a View

Make the evening more memorable with dinner at a waterfront restaurant along the Embarcadero. Some restaurants offer window seating overlooking the harbor, so you can enjoy a meal while watching the festive activity outside. Reserve a table ahead of time and ask about harbor-facing windows when booking.

Walk the Embarcadero and Take Holiday Photos

The Embarcadero is a lovely place for a relaxed stroll, especially when the holiday lights brighten the evening. You’ll find plenty of waterfront shops to explore while enjoying the seasonal decorations. Bring your camera or phone to capture family photos with the illuminated boats and Morro Rock in the background.
